Mogilev (official transliteration: Mahilioŭ; also Mahilyow; Belarusian: Магілёў, pronounced [maɣʲiˈlʲou̯]; Russian: Могилёв, pronounced [məɡʲɪˈlʲof]) is a city in eastern Belarus, on the Dnieper River, about 76 kilometres (47 miles) from the border with Russia's Smolensk Oblast and 105 km (65 miles) from the border with Russia's Bryansk Oblast. As of 2011, its population was 360,918, up from an estimated 106,000 in 1956. The City of Mogilev is the third largest city of Belarus by population (about 370,000 people). The City is located on the picturesque banks of the Dnieper which falls into the Black Sea. About half of the industrial goods of Mogilev Region are produced in Mogilev. The City is located at the intersection of the most important traffic arteries, which connect Mogilev with Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and the Baltic states. Mogilev airport can accommodate modern aircraft used on international lines, including Boing-737.
